Department Overview

Brief History:  The Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation Department was established in 1911, as the Macon Playground Association. In the 1950's the Association merged with the Park's Department to form the Macon Recreation and Parks Department.  In 1969 the Department became known as the Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation Department in order to service the entire county.  The Department is charged with the responsibility of management and development of parks and recreation facilities and services for all citizens of Macon and Bibb County. 

  • Clients Served: 153,000 +/- population of Bibb County and surrounding counties
  • Residents of the City of Macon and Bibb County including Lizella and Payne City.

Park Services:

  • Responsible for operations, maintenance, and capital improvements to the seventy-five parks and recreation areas in Macon & Bibb County.
  • Responsible for planning, design, and development of new parks and recreation facilities.

Programs Offered:

  • Sports/Athletics; Instructional/Enrichment; Special Events; Special Populations (Senior Citizens and Physically/Mentally challenged); Interpretive/Environmental Education; Cultural Arts.

Services Rendered:

  • Annual Volunteer Awards Program; Volunteer Training: Coaches (NYSCA), Board Appointees, Senior Adults, Citizens/Students (Special Events).
  • Facilitate leisure services planned by organizations throughout Macon and Bibb County. 
  • Provide public awareness and public education services in regard to recreation and parks opportunities.
  • Assist youth sports organizations whose services compliment those of the Department.
  • Organize and develop support groups for recreation and parks services, i.e. Senior Citizens Advisory Council, Trails Advocacy Groups, Youth Sports Booster Clubs, and Community Center Advisory Councils just to name a few.
